How to Make the Best Study Timetable for Students

“The lost time is never found again.”

This famous quote by Benjamin Franklin aptly tells the importance of time. For students, time management is one of the crucial ways to excel in their exams and their lives. It can be done easily with a timetable and the will to follow it religiously. It not only helps in the optimal utilisation of their time but also offers them better clarity and makes them focus more on their studies. A timetable also prevents unwanted anxiety due to the incompleted syllabus before the exams. Students can either go for a physical or a digital copy of the timetable as per their liking and requirements. A physical copy is more personalised, whereas a digital copy is easier to edit.

Here are a few tips to prepare a perfect timetable for students

  • Know the syllabus: Before start making a timetable a student should have a good idea about the syllabus. Knowing the syllabus offers clarity about the number of subjects and the chapters needed to be completed in the time frame.
  • Deadlines and other important dates: Another essential thing to list are the deadlines and the important dates. This will make creating the timetable smoother, as the student would not allocate important study sessions during the days like school picnics, or camping.

  • Allocate time to each subject: After having clarity about the subjects and deadline, a student needs to devote time to the subjects. There are two ways to devote time-

     1.  Equal allocation: Here students can devote an equal number of hours or days to all the subjects. This type of allocation is advised at the beginning of the school session. As it helps in developing in-depth knowledge about each subject.

     2. Unequal allocation: If a student is preparing a timetable two or three months before the final exams, then the unequal allocation is advised, as by now the student has an idea about which subject needs more time than the other.

  • Broader and specific approach: Before start making a timetable a student should follow two approaches-

     1. Broader: This approach includes the timetables made for a month or the entire session. Under this, a student can divide the entire syllabus into a few parts and allocate a certain time frame under which that should be completed.

     2. Narrower or more specific approach: This is mainly followed while creating a timetable for a week or two. Under this, students divide the chapters or subjects that need to be completed within the time.

Note: These two approaches go hand-in-hand and have to be followed simultaneously by a student.

  • Incorporate breaks: The best timetable for students always includes enough breaks in between the study sessions. As per research, taking a break from study hours helps in refreshing the mind and body. It further enhances the ability to focus. If the student is using the laptop for study, then closing the eyes for 10-15 minutes with an ice pack over them would provide a soothing effect. Using social media during break time is not a good idea, instead, any outdoor activity could be more useful.

  • Dividing bigger tasks into smaller and achievable ones: Breaking a bigger chapter into smaller parts and completing them one by one, provides a satisfying impression to the brain. This is one of the best ways to complete a difficult task in a limited time with more efficiency.

  • Revision hours:  A perfect timetable for students should have separate revision hours. Ideally, the student should devote at least an hour during the end of the day to revise what he or she studied during the entire day. Similarly, a day in a week should be devoted to revising the whole week’s study portion. All this helps in retaining the difficult concepts of different subjects by the students.

  • Avoid overloading: One of the most essential things to avoid is overloading and creating an unrealistic and unachievable timetable. Students often commit this mistake and end up losing their confidence by not completing the tasks on time. So, it is better to start small, and with time when the speed of task completion increases, a student can add bigger tasks within the time frame.
