Protecting Heritage Through Collective Responsibility By Siddhant Melant, DP 1 As part of our Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) journey, a group of us—Siddharth, Ved, Aditya Aggarwal, Aditya Kumar, JC, Nikhil, Devdutt, Laksh, Agneya Verma, and I, Siddhant—embarked on what we initially thought would be a casual visit to Sinhagad Fort. However, the experience quickly turned into a meaningful act of service. A Call to Action While admiring the breathtaking views from the summit, we were disheartened to see litter scattered across this historic site. Realizing the importance of preserving our cultural heritage, we decided to take action. Armed with trash bags and gloves, we began collecting waste, determined to restore the fort’s natural beauty. A Small Effort with a Big Impact As we worked, we engaged with other visitors, discussing the significance of maintaining historical landmarks. Many appreciated our efforts and expressed concerns about the increasing littering problem. These conversations reinforced the need for greater awareness and collective responsibility in preserving our heritage. Though the cleanup was physically demanding, it was incredibly rewarding. Collaborating outside our usual academic setting strengthened our teamwork and gave us a shared sense of purpose. This initiative was not just about cleaning up—it was about fostering a sense of responsibility and inspiring change. Learning Beyond the Classroom By the end of the day, we had collected a significant amount of waste, leaving the fort noticeably cleaner. More importantly, we walked away with a profound sense of fulfillment and a deeper appreciation for our history. Documenting our efforts through photos, we hoped to encourage others to take similar initiatives. This experience was more than just a service activity—it was a lesson in environmental awareness, civic responsibility, and the power of small actions leading to larger impact. CAS Initiative: Parent-Teacher Meeting
Parent-Teacher Meeting Stalls – A Blend of Creativity and Entrepreneurship By Harsifat Kaur, IBDP 1 Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) have always been a significant event at Vishwashanti Gurukul, offering students, parents, and teachers a platform for meaningful discussions about academic progress. However, this time, the event took on a new dimension with a student-led CAS initiative—an interactive and vibrant stall showcasing handmade bandanas and dupattas, created by DP1 students during our tie-and-dye CAS sessions. Bringing Our Creativity to Life Each student played a crucial role in bringing this project to fruition. Divided into groups, we experimented with various tie-and-dye techniques, ensuring that every piece was unique. Seeing our handcrafted designs beautifully displayed at the stall was incredibly rewarding—it was a testament to our teamwork, creativity, and dedication. Beyond the Classroom: Learning Entrepreneurship Managing the stall was an eye-opening experience for me. Initially, I thought it would be simple, but I soon realized that it felt like running a small business. Every aspect—from inventory and marketing to customer engagement and financial management—required careful planning and execution. My friends—Heer, Rudra, Soham, Kashish, Namastyu, Ved, Rahul, Laksh, and Presha—and I worked together to set up the stall, arrange the products attractively, and interact with customers. We also shared the creative process behind our tie-and-dye designs, making the experience more engaging for visitors. A Refreshing Addition One of the highlights of our stall was Kashish’s homemade lemonade—a refreshing treat that was an instant hit among parents and teachers. Her delicious Nimbu Sharbat received fantastic feedback and added a warm, welcoming touch to our initiative. Creativity Meets Responsibility Another aspect I truly enjoyed was designing the promotional poster for our stall. I carefully selected colors and backgrounds to align with the stall’s aesthetic, ensuring it was eye-catching and effectively conveyed the essence of our project. Beyond the creative elements, this experience reinforced essential life skills—teamwork, adaptability, and responsibility. I realized how even the smallest tasks contribute to the success of a larger event. Time Management and Reflection Balancing academics with stall preparations was a challenge, but it helped me develop better time management skills. Prioritizing tasks efficiently and staying organized under pressure became key takeaways from this experience. A Fulfilling Experience This CAS initiative was more than just a stall—it was a journey of learning, collaboration, and self-discovery. It allowed us to refine our communication and sales skills, work as a team, and gain hands-on experience in entrepreneurship. I would love to participate in similar initiatives again, as they provide an opportunity to explore new skills while making a meaningful impact. The event welcomed students from Mahavir School for the Deaf and Mute, fostering meaningful interactions and moments of profound learning, embodying the true spirit of service. Bridging Communication Barriers Leading up to the event, our students actively prepared by learning basic sign language during CAS sessions. This effort enabled them to communicate meaningfully with their guests, fostering a deeper connection. An interactive session by Mrs. Kamini Ma’am from Mahavir School further enriched their understanding, offering insights into sign language and the experiences of the visiting students. Acts of Kindness and Joy Adding to the day’s warmth, DP student Rohan Choudhari chose to celebrate his birthday in the most thoughtful way—by distributing stationery kits to the visiting students. His generosity was met with cheers, making his special day even more memorable and reinforcing Anand Mela’s spirit of giving. Engaging Activities and Performances The event was filled with a variety of interactive activities, including cricket, dodgeball, painting, dance, and team games, creating an atmosphere of excitement and camaraderie. The highlight of the day was the remarkable performances by Mahavir School students, including a mesmerizing dance routine and an impressive pyramid formation, leaving our students in awe of their talent and determination. The Unifying Power of Sports A friendly yet competitive sports session brought everyone together, as students enthusiastically participated in cricket and football matches, showcasing teamwork, enthusiasm, and the unifying power of sports. A Memorable Conclusion As the event concluded, our guests were taken on a special visit to the iconic World Peace Dome within our school campus, offering a serene moment of reflection. To ensure they felt valued and cared for, the school arranged the distribution of essential items such as groceries, food, and stationery, along with a special meal, creating a heartfelt moment of togetherness. GURUKULIANS’ JOURNEYJANAUARY 2024 READ NOW EY2 – Sun and Shadow EY2 students embarked on an exciting exploration of the solar system through a creative Sun and Shadow Drawing activity. As part of their learning, they used their favorite toys to observe how sunlight creates shadows and traced these shadows onto paper. The young learners eagerly added letters, colors, and creative details to make their artwork more vibrant and meaningful. This hands-on experience provided a fun and interactive way to understand how shadows form and change position as the Sun moves across the sky. By engaging in this activity, students not only explored the concepts of light and shadow but also developed their observational skills and fine motor coordination. The activity sparked curiosity and encouraged them to ask questions about the natural world, making the learning process both enjoyable and memorable. EY3 Chemistry Lab Visit The EY3 children’s visit to the chemistry lab was an exciting and enriching experience that brought science to life in the most engaging way! As they stepped into the well-equipped and organized lab, their eyes sparkled with curiosity and excitement. The young learners were introduced to basic, safe science experiments, where they mixed colorful liquids to create fizzy bubbles and observed intriguing chemical reactions between different substances. These hands-on activities allowed them to see the magic of science unfold right before their eyes. Through interactive games and simple experiments, the children developed a deeper appreciation for the wonders of chemistry while having fun. The visit not only fostered a sense of discovery but also encouraged them to ask questions and think critically about the world around them. Exploring the Animal Kingdom – A Fun and Educational Field Trip! As part of their ongoing unit on the Animal Kingdom, learners embarked on an exciting field trip to Katraj Zoo in Pune on 23rd January. This visit provided them with a valuable opportunity to observe a wide variety of animals in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. Walking through the zoo, students were fascinated by the different species they encountered, deepening their understanding of animal behaviors, adaptations, and ecosystems. This hands-on learning experience helped bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world observation, making the study of wildlife more engaging and meaningful. After an enriching time at the zoo, the excitement continued as the PYP 2 learners headed to McDonald’s for a delightful lunch. The students shared their favorite moments from the trip while enjoying their meals, making the day not just educational but also fun-filled. The field trip was a perfect blend of learning and leisure, leaving the young explorers with wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation for the Animal Kingdom. Field Trip to Malhar Rose Nursery – A Blooming Experience! On 17th January 2025, our students had a wonderful opportunity to visit the Malhar Rose Nursery, where they immersed themselves in the vibrant world of plants and trees. The trip began with an engaging introduction to the different species grown at the nursery, with a special focus on the diverse varieties of roses. Students were fascinated to learn about the unique characteristics of each plant, including their growth patterns, environmental needs, and the care required to keep them healthy and thriving. As they explored the nursery, students observed firsthand the processes involved in plant cultivation, from soil preparation to watering techniques. They asked insightful questions, eagerly absorbing knowledge about sustainable gardening and the role of plants in our ecosystem. The field trip was not only an educational experience but also a joyful one, inspiring a deeper appreciation for nature. Students returned to school enriched with valuable knowledge, fond memories, and a newfound curiosity for the natural world around them. Exploring the Wonders of Matter! Our students stepped into the fascinating world of matter, uncovering the secrets of solids, liquids, and gases. They explored how these states differ, yet sometimes mirror each other like twins. To deepen their understanding of molecular behavior, they creatively crafted human figure models, visually representing how molecules arrange themselves in different states of matter. The excitement continued as students experimented with transformations, witnessing firsthand how substances freeze, melt, vaporize, condense, and even seem to disappear! Chemical changes took center stage as they dived into hands-on learning, turning ordinary milk into fresh, homemade cottage cheese. This interactive approach to learning science made the mysteries of matter come alive, sparking curiosity and wonder in every experiment! Story – Role Play As part of the theme “How We Express Ourselves,” PYP 5 students showcased their creativity by exploring the idea of uniqueness through storytelling. Using expressive role-play, they brought their stories to life, demonstrating their individuality and personal perspectives. Their enthusiasm and confidence shone through as they passionately shared their narratives, making the experience both inspiring and engaging. The activity encouraged them to embrace their originality and communicate their ideas in a dynamic and meaningful way. Prepositions in Action Learning prepositions became an exciting adventure as PYP 5 students took their lesson outdoors, turning grammar into an interactive experience. Through role-play, they acted out words like under, over, beside, between, and through using the school lawn. Crawling under each other, jumping over obstacles, and standing between trees made learning fun and engaging. Laughter and teamwork reinforced their understanding, making grammar lessons both enjoyable and memorable. This hands-on approach helped students grasp prepositions in a way that went beyond textbooks, bringing language learning to life! The Heartbreak of the Los Angeles Fires The recent Los Angeles fires have left behind more than just scorched landscapes—they have shattered lives, displaced families, and turned cherished homes into ashes. Over 12,000 houses and businesses have been destroyed, and at least 27 lives were tragically lost. Thousands of residents fled in the dead of night, forced to make impossible choices about what to save as the roaring flames consumed everything in their
