Incorporating Creativity and Art in Preschool Curriculum

The preschool years are a fun yet fundamental time of a child’s life. It is a joyful period that lays the groundwork for what’s to come in the future. Preschool is an important stage for children to indulge in creativity and art, an important aspect of early childhood education.

At MIT Gurukul, a premier preschool in Maharashtra, we believe that at the heart of effective and meaningful education lies a child’s innate creativity. Our philosophy is evident in our preschool curriculum, where we combine creativity and art in our teaching methods. In this blog, we will further explore how we incorporate art and creativity into our curriculum to help preschool children grow into well-rounded adults.

What is Creativity in Child Development?

Creativity in child development isn’t just about painting pretty pictures or crafting with coloured paper. It is about learning to think differently, explore ideas and express oneself in unique ways. When children are encouraged to be creative, they confidently develop problem-solving skills and the ability to see the world from new perspectives. Whether it is storytelling, imaginative play or experimenting with new activities, creativity nurtures curiosity and resilience. At MIT Gurukul, we believe that creative expression is a vital part of learning, as it helps children grow into adaptive and innovative individuals to flourish in an ever-changing world.

The Role of Creativity in Child Development

A child’s creative peak is often achieved before the age of 6, which is a crucial age for development. Creativity is often perceived as the ability to create art, but it is much more. It is the ability to generate new ideas, see different perspectives, and find unique solutions to problems. It is also a crucial aspect of a child’s development.

Creative exercises are often linked to cognitive development. When children hold a pencil or crayon when drawing or colouring, it also helps in the development of motor skills. Art and creativity help develop a child’s imagination and curiosity, in addition to enabling visual learning and better memory by developing the brain’s functions

For young children who may find it hard to use words to express their feelings, creativity and art often act as an outlet that helps them express their emotions. Research by the NIH has concluded that children who engage in creative exercises tend to show fewer signs of anti-social behaviour. Such children also show a lower probability of developing mental health issues. Creativity is certainly an important aspect of a child’s overall development, which is why it is an inherent part of MIT Gurukul’s preschool curriculum.

MIT Gurukul’s Approach to Art-Integrated Learning

At MIT Gurukul, a top preschool in Maharashtra, we integrate creativity and art within our curriculum. It is not an afterthought; rather, it is a part of our teaching philosophy. Our preschool curriculum is specially designed to infuse art with academic learning to enable a child’s holistic development. Let’s explore some of the ways we include art in different subjects.

  • Mathematics – Instead of noting numbers down on paper, we encourage our students to count colourful beads, sort leaves by shape, and use play-dough to create geometric shapes. This helps students learn mathematical concepts by indulging in creative exercises.
  • Science – We encourage students to draw and paint various scientific processes, such as evaporation, the life cycle of a butterfly, etc. Not only do concepts become more memorable this way, but it also allows students to indulge in art.
  • Language – At MIT Gurukul, we turn stories into interactive experiences. Children are encouraged to act out stories or draw their favourite scenes. We aim to engage multiple senses to ensure a thrilling experience for the students.

These are not the only ways, though! At MIT Gurukul, we also conduct regular classes for students to explore dance, music, acting, art, and more. Our efforts are supported by our highly trained teachers, who create creative lesson plans to engage children in an immersive learning experience.

Our educators create a safe, judgment-free environment where every child feels empowered to explore their creativity. They don’t just follow the preschool curriculum; they make it their own to create teaching methods that truly enable a child’s holistic development in the classroom.

Conclusion

Creativity and art are important tools that enhance a child’s ability to think and innovate. At MIT Gurukul,  we place creativity at the core of our teaching methods. We offer our learners a vibrant and joyful environment to explore their talents and potential. We aim to help them develop the confidence they need to thrive by nurturing their creativity and originality. To learn more about our teaching methods, get in touch with us now!
