The Heartbreak of the Los Angeles Fires

The recent Los Angeles fires have left behind more than just scorched landscapes—they have shattered lives, displaced families, and turned cherished homes into ashes. Over 12,000 houses and businesses have been destroyed, and at least 27 lives were tragically lost. Thousands of residents fled in the dead of night, forced to make impossible choices about what to save as the roaring flames consumed everything in their path. Even after the fires have died down, the devastation lingers—80,000 people remain unable to return home, their futures uncertain, their communities forever changed. The financial toll is staggering, with damages exceeding $250 billion, disrupting livelihoods and reshaping entire neighborhoods.

But these fires are not isolated tragedies; they are a stark reminder of the growing climate crisis. Droughts, extreme heat, and fierce winds are fueling more frequent and intense wildfires, pushing us toward an uncertain future. This disaster is a call to action. We cannot afford complacency—we must prioritize sustainable solutions, strengthen disaster preparedness, and advocate for policies that protect both people and the planet. The heartbreak of the Los Angeles fires must not be in vain; it must ignite a collective effort to prevent such devastation in the years to come.

IB Learner Profile - Being Principled

The morning assembly at Gurukul, led by Keshavi and Aananya, set an inspiring tone for the day as they focused on one of the core values in the IB Learner Profile—Being Principled. Beginning with an insightful quote by Stephen Covey, “There are three constants in life… change, choice, and principles,” the assembly reminded students of the importance of making the right choices. Ansh then shared a thought-provoking quote from Thomas Jefferson, “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock,” encouraging everyone to adapt to change but hold firm to their values. Iva continued by elaborating on the value of being principled, highlighting honesty, fairness, and standing by one’s beliefs even in challenging situations.

The assembly also kept students engaged with updates from within the school and the wider world. Rudra and Sumit shared exciting school news and national updates, while Rudra Pandya expanded perspectives with global highlights. A fun quiz on what it means to be principled was conducted by the MYP 3 Guru students, followed by a short skit by MYP 3 Chandra students, creatively illustrating the significance of standing by one’s values. The assembly ended with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Jainna and the National Anthem of Mozambique, led by Amber. The key takeaway for everyone was clear: being principled is not just a value, but a way of life, shaping our integrity, honesty, and fairness in every choice we make.

Importance of Body Language

Actions speak louder than words. Humankind began communicating through body language long before language was invented. Body language is a form of nonverbal communication, including gestures, posture, gaze, and touch. For everyone, especially teens, maintaining correct posture while seated in class or walking in corridors is crucial. A casual seating position can lead to a lack of attention and focus. Similarly, actions such as keeping hands on each other’s shoulders or avoiding eye contact while talking often reflect a lack of confidence. It’s easy to be influenced by peer pressure, leading to distractions like making sounds in class or putting one’s head down while the teacher is speaking. However, such behavior can harm learning. Discipline starts with body language and must be consciously practiced at all times, whether on the sports field or in academic settings.
